During WWII five Sullivan brothers from Iowa went down with their ship, prompting the movie "The Fighting Sullivans." Later, the movie "Saving Private Ryan" took its theme from this incident.

During the Vietnam War five young men from New Hampshire were killed when their ton-and-a-half truck hit a land mine on the way to a plane that would bring them home.

"And They Were Five" is their story, and introduces BILLY ZABKA ("Karate Kid", "Back to School"), in his first "tough guy" film role at the tender age of 5.Our film begins innocently as we find five small boys playing in a in a back yard. Suddenly, we are brought into the harsh world of men at war (shown in actual Tet Offensive battle footage). The five boys, now grown men, all die on the battlefield. We see them being brought back to their home town one last time by a Marine Honor Guard. The final sequence of the film, in which the camera searches the empty playground, is a haunting evocation of innocence lost and lives brutally destroyed.

Himself a veteran of two wars, film director Stan Zabka composed as song which runs throughout the film, commenting suberbly on the images.
